Elderly Physiotherapy (or Geriatric Physiotherapy) is dedicated to improving the health, mobility, and quality of life for older adults. Specialising in age-related conditions such balance issues, muscle weakness and general deconditioning, our tailored treatments focus on enhancing independence and preventing falls. Through targeted strength-building exercises, balance training, and personalised mobility strategies, we aim to reduce fall risk and support safer daily living.
Falls and fractures pose a significant health risk for older individuals in the UK. With statistics showing that individuals aged 65 and above have the highest risk of falling, it is alarming to note that approximately 33% of this age group and 50% of those aged 80 and above fall at least once a year (Gov.uk 2022).
Aside from the physical injuries and pain caused by falls, they also lead to emotional distress, loss of confidence, independence, and in some cases, mortality. It is important to take measures to prevent falls, especially among the elderly population.
It has been shown that multifactorial risk assessments and strategies can reduce falls by up to 24% (NHS Right Care). In addition, evidence-based exercise programmes in the community have been seen to reduce falls by up to 34% (Sherrington et al. 2019).
